An update on recent conflict and current peace efforts in the Nuba Mountains
“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7
| Dear friends of Sudan Church Partners, For the last few weeks, SCP and other ministries have been devastated to learn of a major outbreak of violence in the areas surrounding Kauda, the regional capital of the Nuba Mountains. We have been supporting Bishop Andudu and his ministry of peace workshops in the region since a major tribal conflict in 2022. What is happening now builds off of 2022 but also on a larger scale and is involving many tribes in conflict over land disputes and access to limited resources. The fighting has caused many deaths and also the destruction of homes and other properties, displacing many families right before the rainy season. Bp Andudu was elected to lead the new multi-denominational peace and reconciliation committee formed to contribute towards deescalating this issue. His peace workshops have gained the support and trust of both religious and non-religious leaders and he is seen as a trusted figure for all parties in the conflict. Bp Elsir of the recently founded Diocese of Heiban is also a major leader in this committee and, because of his proximity to the fighting, has been involved in many important efforts, including multiple key meetings at the very heart of the fighting. His diocese is significantly impacted by the fighting and the tribal tensions which overlap in their churches. This conflict has reenforced how important Bp Andudu’s work for peace has been and will continue to be. We have already been seeing the need to develop this on a greater scale and current issues are catalyzing this even further. When the dust settles, we look forward to processing with Andudu and his team on how this will affect the workshops and other peace efforts going forward. But meanwhile, we need to join our Sudanese brothers and sisters as well as Western ministries and NGOs working in the region in prayer and fasting for the peace & reconciliation committee’s efforts! We are very grateful for the work of One Tribe who has been contributing significant experience and know-how in peace & reconciliation efforts as well as the work of GNAC (Greater Nuba Actsion Coalition) who are coordinating humanitarian relief efforts for areas affected. This conflict has allowed SCP to get to know others working in the region better and we are so grateful to see how different groups are called to support the churches and people of the Nuba Mountains in different ways. All of this once again highlights our mission as SCP in “equipping the Sudanese Church in the formation of Christ-Centered Leaders”. We know that Christ has a unique kind of peace to offer to the individuals and communities of the region. Let us be in prayer for this peace which passes all understanding to equip Nuba’s Christians for this important work of peace & reconciliation happening now! Thank you so much for your support and God bless, Jared Wensyel Executive Director of Sudan Church Partners |
