Turning the Other Cheek
September 16, 2024This newsletter tells how God's resurrection life is shining a bright light in the midst of unspeakable tragedy in Sudan's Nuba Mountains.
One of the World's Greatest Humanitarian Crises
Though often forgotten in the media and the global community, Sudan's civil war rages on. Eight million people have been forced from their homes; eighteen million are on the brink of starvation; outbreaks of measles, cholera, and other preventable diseases are common; nearly 80 percent of hospitals have closed or been destroyed. International aid has largely evaporated and been redirected to the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.
This conflict in Sudan exists because two opposing generals, Abdel-Fattah Burhan and Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, each seeks absolute power in the country. According to a recent UN Report, their two armies operate with cruel impunity through indiscriminate murder of civilians, public beheadings, torture, rape, and looting what little humanitarian food stores are available.
God's Resurrection Hope on Display
Jesus' Resurrection announces the breaking in of God's life of renewal. In even the most desperate of times, God's mercy and power prevail!
Over 300,000 of Sudan's internally displaced people (IDPs) have fled to the Nuba Mountains where the Diocese of Kadugli operates, and where, by God's grace, they find refuge from the ongoing war.
When they arrive, they find communities of Christians who freely share what little they have. They find community leaders and churches working to provide a Christ-centered foundation for survival, hope, and the flourishing of the Nuba people. In partnership with Pax Dei for Nuba, Christians in the Diocese of Kadugli are restoring education and economic opportunity and developing a new generation of servant-leaders.
As a result, many IDPs and Nuba people have turned to the resurrected Christ. The Diocese of Kadugli has grown so much that in January it was subdivided into two separate Dioceses: the Diocese of Kadugli (led by Bishop Andudu Adam Elnail) and the newly birthed Diocese of Hiban (led by Bishop Elisir Hassan Kuku). Each of these Dioceses includes over 60 churches and priests.
Imagine that! God's kingdom is flourishing and providing hope for so many in the midst of such a crisis!
