Blessed Are the Peacemakers
April 10, 2023There is hardly a better gift for a subsistence farming family than a goat.
In places like the Nuba Mountains, goats are prized possessions. They provide milk and nutrition. They can be sold or traded for other goods. They truly can be life-changing.
In January, with a generous $5000 grant from the Christian Veterinary Mission (CVM), the Diocese of Kadugli purchased 106 pregnant goats. Churches reached out by giving the goats to 106 Nuba families who did not know Jesus. This Get a Goat, Give a Goat project was created by Dr. Mary McDonald, a veterinarian and missionary working with CVM.
The good news of Christ's love and sacrifice was shared with the recipients, who also received training on how to care for their goats. Each month, priests and select lay church members conduct visits to provide recipients with continued assistance in caring for their goats and encouragement in their pursuit of God and his Kingdom.
Recipients will give their goat's first offspring back to the church. That kid goat is then passed along to another needy family in the area. In this way, the generous love of Jesus is taught, practiced, and modeled over and over throughout the community.
