2020-2022 Update
December 31, 2022Dear Friends,
The gospel of Luke describes a dramatic scene in which Jesus comes to his hometown synagogue and reads an excerpt from the prophet Isaiah.
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. (Isa. 61:1-2a)
Today we see Isaiah’s prophecy being fulfilled in virtually every nation on earth. Followers of Jesus have become a source of life and renewal in communities devastated by war, disease, and persecution.
Jesus’ words resonate powerfully with the people of Sudan’s Nuba Mountains. They have suffered greatly for generations under brutal dictators and self-serving regimes. And yet the Christians there have been a “Planting from the Lord” who, in Isaiah’s words, are ... building up the ancient ruins… raising up the former devastations…and repairing the ruined cities. (Isa. 61:4)
The Christians in Sudan’s Diocese of Kadugli are doing this in the Nuba Mountains by
- Rebuilding Grace Secondary School (destroyed by government forces in 2016)
- Raising up college-trained teachers to prepare the next generation of Christ-centered leaders
- Taking the gospel into communities who have suffered under harsh Sharia Law
- Providing a source of meaningful work and income through the Mother’s Union Sewing Guild
- Equipping community leaders to apply the wisdom and justice of King Jesus to promote peacebuilding and reconciliation
- Training priests and leaders who can provide pastoral care to new Christians as they learn to follow Jesus
