August 22, 2022This Month: Meet Sarah, Gihan, and the Women's Sewing Guild

Sarah and Gihan, leaders of the Women's Sewing Guild
In early 2020 Pax Dei for Nuba offered to help Grace Secondary School acquire reusable sanitary pads so that female students can spend more days in school. But Sarah and Gihan had another idea: Let's make the pads ourselves, and train women to sew in the process.
Using $4,000 in seed money from Pax Dei for Nuba, Sarah and Gihan worked with the Mother's Union and the Diocese of Kadugli to create a training center and professional curriculum in tailoring. Not only did women make sanitary pads for the school, they were equipped to mend and create clothes, decorations, and other items they can sell in the marketplace.
As of April 2022, 26 people have completed the program, and Sarah and Gihan have built four training centers. Asked how women have responded to the program, Sarah says "They are happy. They are excited—they never thought they would have such programs here. Now they are thinking how to help their families at home."
This year Pax Dei for Nuba plans to continue support for Sarah, Gihan, and the Women's Sewing Guild on their way to financial sustainability and independence.
